Born to Whisper

An Autobiography with Horses, part II.

After meeting Monty Roberts in 1996, Nicole Golding and Adam Goodfellow were among the first people in the UK to become 'horse whisperers'.

Born to Whisper is the much-awaited sequel to their first book, Whispering Back, they chart the highs and lows of working in one of the world's most romantic professions, as they help people to make sense of their horses' behaviour. From wild, untouchable horses, to those who violently attack anyone who comes within striking distance, they have seen it all.

Yet their story goes far beyond tales of remedial horses. From surfing to rock music, from the Cotswolds to Hawaii, from tragedy to the joy of giving birth - in a stable, no less - this book is a remarkable chronicle, taking the reader on a voyage that helps make sense of the contradictions of modern life.

Ever since Whispering Back was published in 2003, people have been asking us when the next book would be published. Now, six years, two children and hundreds of horses later, Born to Whisper is finally here!

This is our first venture into self-publishing, and we're absoutely delighted with the results. The books are printed in the UK on high quality paper (approved by the Forestry Stewardship Council), and include nearly 40 colour photos. Born to Whisper is in Quality Paperback format, the same size as the Whispering Back hardback, and looks gorgeous.

Many readers have told us that even their non-horsey partners enjoyed Whispering Back, which is just as well as several people admitted to having brought it on a romantic holiday or even their honeymoon, and not being able to put it down!

Born to Whisper is similar, full of true-to-life horse stories and adventures, and also tackles some of the burning issues in the horse world today, from a personal and informed perspective. Interwoven with the daily highs and lows of our lives as horse whisperers is the tale of our personal journey into parenthood, an adventure as exciting and profound as anything we've done so far.

Born to Whisper takes advantage of the new digital print-on-demand technology, which means that rather than printing large quantities in China and having them shipped over, each copy can be printed individually. The printer is in the UK providing local jobs and using paper certified as being of genuinely sustainable sources. Although this means each copy costs more to produce, it's a more ethical and less wasteful way to do it. Currently we are distributing books abroad from here, but we are in the process of arranging stock to be available in other countries.

For small scale book vendors, and those who want to buy multiple copies as gifts, we've got some great discounts on bulk buys. We will be happy to write a message in them for you, and also to gift-wrap them if you are sending them to a friend.

Praise For Born To Whisper

Although I don`t know a thing about horses, I really loved this book. I committed the cardinal sin of buying it purely on account of the excellent cover photo but soon found it to be beautifully co-written in an engaging, unstuffy, free-flowing style with many amusing, ironic asides which cleverly counterbalance what must have been a hard struggle for both authors overcoming quite a few obstacles in realising their collective, idyllic dream. I admire both the way they have battled through it and how successfully they have "won over" some especially difficult and not to mention dangerous horses in the process. Rather them than me!! A very enjoyable and entertaining read. (R.F. Monmouth)

The book is such an inspiration to 'ordinary' people such as me, I only got my first horse 18 months ago after a lifetime of dreaming about having one (I am a middle aged woman in my 40s) and we are having a wonderful time together, but I often feel incompetent because I haven't had horses all my life and I have so much to learn. But your books make me think that it is never too late to start and many of the issues you write about in Born To Whisper are real issues for me and it is often difficult to share those views with others around me here on Dartmoor where very traditional approaches to training and dealing with horses are the norm. (N.N. Devon)

I have just finished your wonderfully honest and inspiring book, I look forward to the next one .... when you will have time to write it I cant imagine! (B.H. Bristol)

I just wanted to say thank you for another wonderful book! I thoroughly enjoyed it, I laughed with you, cried with you and once again you have inspired me to be a better person, not just in the way I handle horses, but in my life in general, so thank you and congratulations. The intro by Sensi had me in stitches, I think she's got real talent! (K.H. UK)

I'm just writing to say a big thank you for the personally signed copy of 'Born To Whisper' that you sent for me (and Apollo of course!). I would normally have written sooner, however I've only just finished reading it (very unusual for me - I've been referred to as a 'bookworm' by my family for years!). I found myself pausing for long periods of time on almost every page, as each one seemed to have something new and profound to say that caused me to drift off into a world of my own - linking the ideas to horses I've known or simply life in general. I've never heard of the 'Insight' seminars that Adam talks about in one chapter, but just reading about the concepts made me feel I was learning more about myself as a person. As always with your writing, I put the book down feeling incredibly inspired. (C.F. UK)

Just thought I would write to say how much I have enjoyed your new book. Lots of insights and interesting horsey observations - your book was just packed with thought provoking stories. I hope loads of us will read it, otherwise we are missing out on so much shared experience and possible learning. (S.H. Berks)

I would like to apologise for demolishing in a few hours what has been years of your horse experience. I got my copy of "Born To Whisper" on Tuesday and simply wasn't able to put it down. Like "Whispering Back" both human and horse elements made me laugh, cry and think. It is impossible to ignore many welfare issues of tack, riding technique and barefoot vs shoeing after the stories of so many horses in "Born To Whisper" but it give so much hope to change a horse's world if we learn to listen to what they're telling us (and that's just after the first read). (L.W. Scotland)

I picked up your book at 11 p.m. last night for some bedtime reading and finished at 4.40 a.m.! I absolutely love it and thank you so much for being so honest in all the things that you have written. There was so much in there with which I can identify - even down to a termination - and I am so glad that you were brave enough to write about it. It's not an easy thing to do or to live with. I cried all the way through the chapters about PJ too. I sometimes wonder if it is only through experiencing such pain that you can develop the degree of empathy you need to see how it is or can be for horses. (S.W. Hants)

Whispering Back

After a chance meeting with Monty Roberts, Nicole Golding and Adam Goodfellow gave up their livelihoods to pursue their dream of becoming horse whisperers.

At their beautiful stables in the Cotswolds, they spend time nurturing badly treated horses. They have transformed wild, uncared for beasts into placid, endearing horses. Over the years they have fallen in love with the deep brown eyes of many an injured pony and have built strong relationships with their owners too.

Now they welcome you into their unique world, full of charming, eccentric tales where an engaging cast of characters are brought together in the heart of the English countryside.
